Enhancing Accessibility in Tallinn's Public Transportation Timetables

 Project Overview

Navigating Tallinn’s public transportation has often been a source of frustration for me.

The inconsistent placement of timetables at bus stops requires passengers to circle around posts, searching for schedules that are often positioned at varying heights and locations.

This disarray not only complicates travel but also diminishes the overall user experience.

Motivated by these personal challenges, I embarked on a project to redesign the city’s public transportation timetables, aiming to create a more intuitive and accessible system for all commuters

 Design Process:

  • Personal Experience and Observation: My own difficulties in locating and reading timetables at various bus stops highlighted the need for a standardized and user-friendly design. Observations revealed that timetable placements were often random, with some positioned too high, others too low, and many lacking adequate lighting or clear signage.
  • User-Centered Research: Engaged with a diverse group of commuters, including individuals with visual impairments, wheelchair users, and tourists, to gather insights into their experiences and challenges with the current system. This collaborative approach ensured that the redesign would address a wide range of needs and preferences.
  • Design and Prototyping: Developed a modular timetable system that consolidates all schedules in a single, easily accessible location at each bus stop. Key features include:
    • Standardized Placement: Timetables are positioned at a uniform height and location, ensuring consistency across all stops.
    • Enhanced Readability: Utilized large, high-contrast fonts and color-coding to differentiate between routes, making information easily discernible even in low-light conditions.
    • Accessibility Features: Incorporated tactile elements and Braille for visually impaired users, and ensured that designs are legible for individuals with color blindness.
    • Multilingual Support: Provided information in multiple languages with minimal text, using universally recognized icons to assist tourists and non-native speakers.
  • Cost-Effective Implementation: Designed the solution to be both cost-effective and adaptable, allowing for easy updates and modifications as routes and schedules evolve.

 The Outcome:

The proposed timetable redesign aims to transform Tallinn’s public transportation system into a more organized and user-friendly experience. By addressing the inconsistencies and accessibility issues of the current setup, this project seeks to enhance the daily commute for all residents and visitors, fostering a more inclusive urban environment.

By integrating personal experiences with comprehensive user research, this project underscores the importance of empathy and inclusivity in design, aiming to create a public transportation system that is both efficient and accessible to all.
